Actor: Matthew Gibson (Saint Mark)

A native Kingstonian, Matthew studied acting at Queen’s University and The Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in the U.K. He has been a professional actor for almost 20 years, and has extensive experience in the Kingston theatre scene – including 14 seasons at the Thousand Islands Playhouse – and farther afield in theatres across Canada.

Recent Theatre Kingston productions include The Master Builder, Cherry Docs, Copenhagen and The Winter’s Tale. In the spring of 2005 he was featured as “Bishop” in The Seat Of Your Pants Theatre Company’s critically acclaimed production of the Canadian classic, Billy Bishop Goes to War. Gibson garnered rave reviews for his performance as Leontes in Theatre Kingston's The Winter's Tale:
  • ".. one of the best actors of 2004." - The National Post
  •  “[Gibson’s] mastery of Shakespearean verse is obvious . . . I don’t know why he isn’t at Stratford.” - The Kingston Whig-Standard
  • Eye Magazine called his performance “Dora-worthy”, and raved “Matthew Gibson gave the subtlest, most moving interpretation of the difficult role of Leontes this reviewer has ever seen . . . not at Soulpepper, not at Stratford, have I seen this difficult role played so convincingly.”
And the accolades for Saint Mark are just as glowing:
  • "...stellar vocal and physical performance... magnetic." - The Queen's Journal
  • "... an awe- inspiring experience." - The Kingston Whig Standard

In addition to his performing career, Matthew is the Artistic Director of Hope Theatre Projects .

Now Touring

Kingston actor Matthew Gibson's tour-de-force one-man show The Gospel According to Saint Mark was an enormous critical and audience success in the spring of 2006. Since then, the production has toured to great acclaim to churches across the province. Gibson -- named by The National Post as one of the best actors of 2004 -- gives to what is considered the oldest of the Gospels a dramatic two-hour solo performance, bringing the text alive through a unique blend of storytelling and theatricality.

This remarkable piece is now available for booking at your church. Its beautiful text -- the entire Book of Mark from the King James Bible -- and simple technical requirements make The Gospel According to Saint Mark easily adaptable to most any church sanctuary, theatre or meeting hall. Present it as a special program for your parishioners, or promote it as a church fundraiser, but make sure you don't let the opportunity to experience this extraordinary masterpiece pass you by.
